Managing the neighbors of your backyard wedding should be part of your overall hospitality plan – and I don’t just mean with an invitation eight weeks before. Once you have a firm grasp on the scope of your wedding plans, if you think you’ll need to pre-emptively smooth some ruffled feathers, you should draft a letter explaining your plans and deliver it by hand.
A backyard wedding involves days of deliveries and installations prior to the wedding day. This can be noisy and can clog up your local streets. It is cordial to warn your neighbors. And then on the wedding day, there will be the noise from the guests and the entertainment. There will not only be the transportation that gets your guests to and from your wedding, but there will be dozens of staff who need to park on site. And the vendors may bring larger vehicles like vans or trucks with their equipment.
If you have a particularly cranky neighbor, I recommend setting them up with an evening away from home, including a gift certificate for dinner, tickets to a theatre event or movie, and possibly even a hotel room if you think it best to keep them away overnight.
