Backyard Barn Wedding Reception in Virginia

After their river bank wedding ceremony, Samantha and Mark’s guests gathered around the barn for a casual celebration. Design Cuisine set up a tasty lemonade stand to complement the troughs of canned drinks on ice. Guests played lawn games and enjoyed a photo booth from The Prop Stop. Lynnvale used whitewashed boxes for the centerpieces and Meant To Be Calligraphy did a chalkboard menu for the dinner buffet. Again, thanks to Natalie Lane Photography for the great memories.

A Family Farm Wedding in Virginia

Samantha and Mark married at her mom’s farm in Front Royal, Virginia. The nuptials were on the river bank, with a sweet, personal ceremony filled with the participation of adorable nieces and nephews. Lynnvale Studio created gorgeous blue and white florals. Natalie Lane made these fantastic photos. Sidebar: Samantha’s dad Larry has a business partner named Paul. Between these two dads, I’ve now done four weddings, two of which were at this farm. It gives me such joy and honor to be a regular part of these families’ celebrations.

A Purcellville, Virginia At-Home Wedding Ceremony

Kristyn and Eric debated about whether to host both their wedding ceremony and reception at Eric’ family property in Purcellville, Virginia. Ultimately they decided to host the ceremony there, and to celebrate afterwards at a local vineyard. Laura Ashbrook Photography created these gorgeous pictures, despite it being a slightly drab and dreary day. A property that has been in Eric’s family for generations, Kristyn and Eric will definitely cherish the memories of being able to get ready and marry there. Lynnvale Studios created the stunning and cheery florals for the wedding – I  loved this demure color palette for a September wedding. Kristyn and Eric went with a white top frame tent for the ceremony, with a few strategically placed clear sidewalls to protect their guests from the wind and drizzle. We also had about 50 white umbrellas on hand for guests to use as they got off the buses and walked to the tent.

A Tented Middleburg Wedding Reception for Merritt and Sean

Welcome back to Merritt and Sean’s at-home tented wedding in Upperville, Virginia, which is just outside of Middleburg. If you missed part 1 and part 2, please check them out. So much gorgeousness from Katie Stoops Photography. Today I am going over the reception. The Skyline Tent Company Sperry tent was set at the bottom of the hill below the home, where the ceremony and cocktail hour occurred. The tent overlooked the pond, and the slope of the ground was close to 14 feet for just the tent, so we had a pretty significant floor installed. It was important to us that the guests entered the tent at floor level, and not greeted by a tall wall of structural support and a flight of steps to enter the tent. As you can see, the entrance to the tent was right off the driveway, and we dressed it up with a ton of greenery and a gorgeous wreath. We also put a light here so that guests would be able to depart the tent safely at the end of the night.

The awesome silver chairs came from DC Rental. The linens and cushions came from La Tavola, who is based in California so Merritt actually got to pick them out herself in person. The gorgeous flowers were created by Lavender Green. The lanterns over the dance floor were from Pottery Barn and installed by Skyline Tent Company. Merritt and Sean sat with their wedding party and their guests at a long head table, while the remainder of their family and friends sat at round tables around them.

As I mentioned before, Merritt and Sean are both car enthusiasts and work in the automotive industry. Merritt had her floral vessels custom designed by a Californian and shipped to Virginia for the wedding. The base of the arrangement is a car brake disk, and the stem is a cam shaft from a car engine.

Shortly before the wedding, Merritt’s parents decided to add a deck onto the pond side of the tent. Skyline Tent Company was happy to oblige. We brought in some furniture from AFR, as well as cocktail tables and more of the Pottery Barn lanterns for decor.

Design Cuisine catered the wedding and they more than knocked it out of the park. When guests arrived at the tent, the tables were preset with an amuse bouche of a trio of compressed melon. First course was a caprese napoleon with basil sorbet. Dinner was a choice of filet mignon, halibut or roasted chicken.

The wedding cake, adorned with engine turbine-inspired pinwheels and atop a cake stand made of cam shafts, as well as the groom’s Nissan Skyline cake, were made by chef Jason Reeves. Immediately after the cake cutting, we had a surprise fireworks display from Digital Lightning. The Fabulous Classics from Atlanta kept the dance floor packed all night long. At the end of the night, Merritt and Sean left the reception in a vintage Cadillac from Prime Transportation.

Real At-Home Wedding: Merritt and Sean’s Ceremony

I am back, as promised, with my second post about Merritt and Sean’s backyard wedding in Upperville, Virginia.Today we are looking at the ceremony, which was on the lawn right behind the main house. Skyline Tent Company provided the natural wood folding chairs and Lavender Green created the gorgeous floral arch. Many thanks to Katie Stoops for the photos.

Richie Designs took Merritt and Sean’s save-the-date design, a retro-inspired racing poster, and used it on a fan for the ceremony program. The floral arch featured hundreds of white roses in addition to eucalyptus. The arch was flanked by large potted ferns, some of which were elevated.

Design Cuisine provided pre-ceremony refreshments including watermelon and feta skewers, tea and punch. We placed a floral wreath on the garden statue’s hat.

Merritt and Sean’s pup Rusty escorted Merritt’s mother down the aisle, and proceeded to sunbathe during the ceremony.

Then they joined their guests at the cocktail reception, which was by the pool, in the {decorated} garage and on the patio behind the ceremony space.

Merritt and Sean: A Horse-Country At-Home Wedding in Virginia

In early 2011 I was so lucky to work with Merritt and Sean on their June at-home wedding. Merritt’s parents have a large farm in Upperville, Virginia, which is one town west of Middleburg, Virginia, and even though Merritt and Sean live in Long Beach, California, they knew this was the place where they wanted to wed. I’m going to spend 3 or 4 posts covering their wedding over the next few days. They had a really fantastic wedding, and Katie Stoops made many incredible photos during that day.

First we have this gorgeous invitation suite (above) by Richie Designs. You can see the mechanical gears blind pressed behind the green text, and the couple’s custom monogram on the envelope (more on that later).

In this photo you can see the lay of the land. The residence, where Merritt got ready for the wedding, is atop a hill, overlooking a small pond, where the reception tent was set up. Since there was a significant distance down a gravel driveway, we shuttled guests from the cocktail hour to the reception via small buses. The tent came from Skyline Tent Company, who did an incredible job on the whole event.

The property had a lot of existing details that we were able to jazz up with some simple details. For example, we jazzed up the entry sign to the property with some fabric ribbons. And I placed vintage bow ties on the statues around the property.

All guests were given a Virginia themed welcome bag. We had Virginia peanuts, custom M&Ms (a Virginia based company), Route 11 chips, some local literature, and a water bottle and bag with the couple’s custom, modern monogram.

Merritt and Sean are car enthusiasts who met each other working on a race car, and both work in the automotive industry. So throughout their wedding you will see homages to cars. (Look back at their invitations again). The bridesmaids were given gifts of Tiffany steering wheel necklaces to wear at the wedding.

Merritt found a designer who uses car seat belts to create various items. Merritt brought her on to create a clutch for herself, a bag for the flower girl, and a pillow for the ring bearer. You’ll see the latter two further down the page!

Since Sean is from New Zealand, we incorporated blooms local to the country in the floral designs in addition to lush garden roses, created by Lavender Green. Merritt’s bouquet was tied with lace from her mother’s wedding dress. Merritt and Sean brought their pup Rusty from California to participate in their wedding. He even got a tie to match the groomsmen!
